About Sussex Foot & Ankle Centre

Welcome to the Sussex Foot & Ankle Centre

The Sussex Foot & Ankle Centre was founded in 2005 by two orthopaedic surgeons, David Redfern and Stephen Bendall, with the aim of providing the highest quality specialist service for the diagnosis and treatment of all foot and ankle problems.

David and Stephen our orthopaedic surgeons are dedicated specialists in problems affecting the foot and ankle and have many years of experience. Both are Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeons in Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and provide the NHS foot and ankle service for the whole of Brighton & Hove as well as large parts of East & West Sussex. Both surgeons are also academically very active and have senior appointments within the national and international professional foot and ankle surgery societies (British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, European Foot & Ankle Society).

They also lecture and train medical students at Brighton & Sussex Medical School and appear as invited speakers at many specialist foot and ankle academic meetings nationally and internationally. They are involved in training the surgeons of tomorrow and both lecture on Royal College of Surgeons courses. Mr Bendall is also a senior examiner for the Royal College Surgeons.

Both surgeons have undertaken dedicated research fellowships in the USA at Johns Hopkins University during their careers and have published extensively in the national and international literature on foot and ankle problems. Mr Redfern also completed a specialist foot & ankle fellowship at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol with an internationally renowned foot and ankle surgeon. Both surgeons review for major national and international academic journals. Mr Redfern is on the international review panel for the prestigious Foot & Ankle International Journal and is secretary of the Scientific Committee of the European Foot and Ankle Society.

The Sussex Foot & Ankle Centre provides a comprehensive service of care for patients with all types of foot and ankle problems. This includes sports injuries (including high level / elite sports men and women), trauma, arthritis, metatarsalgia, and bunions. Both specialist surgeons have a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery and are at the forefront of developing such techniques in this country.
